Some still walk, others sleep in stone, and some only exist when someone reads them. My intention here was not to rewrite Anne Rice’s canon—that would be a heresy. The concept of the “familiar,” so common in vampire stories, was not widely used by Anne; the closest thing to it was the relationship between Armand and Daniel in *The Vampire Armand*. It is evident in the subtext that “familiars” are there. There are human guards in the theatre. Lestat and Louis have human servants, lawyers, and all sorts of humans orbit the plot. Elodie is my poetic license. It was about inhabiting it, like a lover who invades the absent beloved’s room and lies down between the sheets still warm from their words.
